If you've seen kids balk at having to show up for piano lessons, you'll appreciate how difficult it can be to introduce children to music. Some kids take naturally to music and musical instruments, but there are others who are initially reluctant. However, when they finally discover that special music and musical instrument that speaks to them.... magic happens.

Getting your child interested in music is a productive way to keep him interested in cultural pursuits, and hopefully he will get so engrossed in music that he will easily select it over other school activities that may not be as wholesome.

Additionally, music opens an entirely new dimension to your child's world. Much like reading a good book, playing music can transport a child to a world previously undiscovered.

Here are some tips on how you can gently but persuasively introduce music into your child's life:

- Expose your child to a range of music types at home. This will allow your child to hear different types of instruments coming through. When possible, point out the names of the different music instruments and interact with your child about the sounds each one makes.

- Create an environment in your home where your child can sing songs, songs about alphabets, numbers, animals, and other things familiar. The association between things he is already familiar with and music will allow him to make a pleasant connection.

- Concerts appropriate for your child's age are an excellent way for the two of you to enjoy music together, and creates a special time that the child can start to associate with music. There are many concerts that you can choose from, and part of attending concerts is the fun involved in getting dressed and ready for what is a fun, special event.

- Give your child a chance to choose the instrument he or she would like to learn to play. Don't be surprised if he chooses to start with a kid's drum. Any instrument that teaches him about rhythm and melody is fair game.

You may not feel that that is the right instrument at that particular time, but try to give your child the opportunity to make decisions about their chosen musical instrument to ease them into the world of music. Help your child select a high-quality beginner musical instrument, one that will provide wonderful sounds for many years.
